When treating water the Chalk Bluff Glendale Water Treatment Facility must release 30 million gallons of treated effluent or “e” water into the Truckee River. This water contains super suspended solids of nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur.
Most life can’t stand the acidification, but these little muscles love it. They are just as invasive as zebra muscles, and can overtake any ecosystem that can support them.
Their color is muted because of the lack of nutrient in their shells.
